Dating is no walk in the park! What do you wear? What shade of lipstick reads classy and what says sassy? To cut through the confusion just in time for Valentine’s Day, ABLE Cosmetics sat down with Professional makeup artist and Matchmaker at Tawkify, Lauren Urasek — who is naturally every girl’s best friend.

Gents! Before you check-out we want to hear from you!

Q: These days, the dating game has completely changed. First impressions aren’t always made in person. You may come across your Prince or Princess Charming while swiping left and right. With that being said – how do you take a great profile picture? What are some good makeup techniques and looks to aim for while striking a pose?

A: Lighting is everything. Natural light is easiest and usually looks the best! Whenever you’re taking a picture, the light should be IN FRONT of you. Not behind you or coming from above – any other direction besides in front of you will cast unflattering shadows. As far as makeup, I encourage everyone to be themselves. Whether natural makeup is your thing or you regularly wear thick black eyeliner and a red lip, you should stick to how you feel comfortable. I love to play up my eyes and especially for photos, slick black liner with a slight wing really makes your eyes pop on camera! Whatever look you choose, make sure your complexion is evened out, you define your features, your lips are moisturized and brows are brushed!

Q: The time has come to meet IRL (in real life) and you have the perfect “I didn’t try” outfit picked out. What is the best makeup look for a first date?

A: I can’t pick just one look as the perfect first date look. However I think it is important to play up your favorite features. If you love your eyes – play up your eyes! If you love your lips – play up your lips! Confidence is key, especially on a first date. Personally, I like to keep things natural by using warm brown tones on my eyes, a thin cat eye, glowing skin and a nude lip!

Q: What is the biggest makeup DON’T for a date?

A: I would suggest not trying anything new on a first date. If you have a go-to look that screams you. Definitely stick with that! The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable or worried about what you look like. You want to be saying to yourself “I really like this person” and not “Is my mascara running down my face?”

Q: Coffee date, brunch date, movie date, concert date, dinner date or just drinks – the options are limitless! Can you recommend one beauty look that is a safe go-to universally for any date that may pop up?

A:  You can’t go wrong with beautiful skin (using a lighter foundation or tinted moisturizer), a bronzed or soft pink cheek, brushed brows, warm buffed out shadows and a super thin brown or black liner on your eyes, mascara, and a neutral lip color!

WHAT THE GUYS HAVE TO SAY

I would rather see you, not your makeup. Keep it clean and classic”

– Garrett

“It’s nice when a girl does her makeup. Maybe a little cat eye or something minimal. It says that a girl cares about how she looks when coming to meet.”

– John

Subtle makeup makes me focus on one of the best features of a woman, her eyes.”

– Steve

5 Ways to Win An Argument In A Relationship

It’s happened– your Springtime in Paris new relationship has hit a significant bump in the road. You’re feeling the urge to say something 180 degrees from “you’re just so perfect and amazing” to your new love interest. Congratulations– this is your first opportunity for a growth power-up!

Quell the impulse to text “We need to talk.” If you’ve already typed it in, with your thumb hovering above “send,” aim for “delete” instead. No one wants to read that; no one wants to be forewarned of impending doom unless they’re watching a movie. You’ll only succeed in spurring the imminent arsenal of defense…

GIVE ME EVERYTHING YOU AM: “Love Again” by Run The Jewels

The other week, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine who is a new father – we’ll call him Cronus – and we were talking about parental instinct. He lowered his voice conspiratorially, considered the infant in his lap and said, “Sometimes I love my baby so much that I want to eat him. Is that normal?”

Turns out, it’s not just normal–it’s science! Olfactory chemical signals–the smells of newborn babies have been linked to dopamine spikes in the brains of new mothers, essentially triggering the same neurological reward circuit activated when a very hungry person eats, or when a heroin addict shoots up…

5 Ways to Avoid the Cliff of Contemporary Dating

I have a friend who dates online… a lot. You could say she’s popular. She gets out again and again because she’s fabulous–which is obvious, even through a screen. Yet she arrives each time preloaded with every personal detail about her date–their hometown, full legal name, and family history–often even their annual income and whether or not they rent or own. IT IS RIDICULOUS. The internet is a fantastic tool for writing a thesis, but should it be used to compose a 15-page, pre-introduction memoir on a potential romantic interest’s life story?…
