A great first date often starts with one key ingredient: the right place. To uncover where sparks are most likely to fly, Tawkify analyzed venue data from Yelp and Google search interest for first-date ideas across 95 major American cities.
We also surveyed 1,000 single adults across the U.S. about their first date preferences, expectations, and deal-breakers. The results reveal which cities set the stage for romance and which ones may need to rethink their date-night options.
Finding the right first date spot can make all the difference between awkward small talk and genuine chemistry. Across the U.S., some cities clearly offer more opportunities for memorable meetups than others.

Denver, Colorado, ranked as the best city in America for first dates overall. The city stood out thanks to a strong mix of highly rated restaurants, bars, breweries, coffee shops, and wine bars, giving singles plenty of options for a relaxed, engaging first meetup.
At the opposite end of the ranking, Wichita, Kansas, placed last among the 95 cities analyzed. Compared to other cities, Wichita had fewer highly rated venues across key date-night categories, making it harder for singles to find standout first date locations.
Minneapolis residents showed the strongest curiosity about planning great dates. The city generated the highest search interest for first date inspiration, with 1,065 searches for “first date ideas” and “first date spots” per 100,000 residents.
Affordability also plays a role in date planning. Chesapeake, Virginia, offered the highest share of affordable date venues, with 25% of Yelp listings falling into the most budget-friendly price tier.
Not every first date looks the same. Some couples prefer a cozy coffee meetup, while others gravitate toward lively bars, breweries, or elegant dinner spots.

Restaurant dates produced a three-way tie at the top. Denver, Portland, and Los Angeles each had 94% of restaurant listings rated 4.0 stars or higher, making them standouts for a classic dinner date.
For bar dates, New York City led the nation with 92% of bar listings rated highly. Enterprise, Nevada, followed at 89%, while Las Vegas rounded out the top three with 88%.
Wine lovers may want to head to Arizona or North Carolina. Glendale, Arizona, topped the rankings with 92% highly rated wine bars, followed by Greensboro, North Carolina, and Scottsdale, Arizona, both at 90%.
Memphis stood out as the best city for brewery dates, with 93% of breweries rated highly. Charlotte followed at 89%, while Austin placed third with 87%.
For coffee dates, often considered the easiest and most low-pressure first meeting, New York City led again with 94% highly rated coffee shops. Portland followed with 92%, and Seattle ranked third with 91%.
Some cities struggled to offer strong first date venues. Port St. Lucie, Florida, ranked lowest for both bars (31%) and restaurants (50%). Wichita, Kansas, had one of the lowest shares of highly rated wine bars (29%) and breweries (50%). Toledo, Ohio, placed last for coffee dates, with only 24% of coffee shops rated 4.0 stars or higher.

While cities can offer great venues, personal preferences ultimately shape the perfect first date. Our survey uncovered clear trends in where singles prefer to meet and what can ruin the experience.

Coffee shops emerged as the most popular first date setting overall, chosen by 28% of singles. Activity-based outings such as mini golf, bowling, or cooking classes followed closely at 22%, suggesting many singles prefer interactive experiences that help break the ice.
Generational differences also stood out. Among Gen Z singles, activity-based dates ranked as the top choice at 28%, highlighting a preference for shared experiences over traditional dinner dates. Interestingly, bars, often the default first date suggestion, ranked as the worst first date setting according to 25% of respondents.

Location clearly matters. More than one in five singles (22%) said they had blamed a bad first date on the location itself, while Gen Z respondents were the most likely to say the venue was the problem (23%).
Cost also plays a role in how people evaluate first dates. On average, singles reported feeling comfortable spending up to $61 for a first date. Among younger daters, affordability was particularly important, 58% of Gen Z respondents said a date that felt “too expensive” was a red flag.
The best first dates strike a balance between comfort, conversation, and a little bit of excitement. Our findings show that cities with a strong mix of high-quality, affordable venues create better opportunities for singles to connect.
From Denver’s standout dining scene to Minneapolis’ curiosity about creative date ideas, the right environment can make meeting someone new feel easier and more natural. And while coffee shops currently reign as the most popular first date choice, changing generational preferences suggest activity-based dates may continue gaining popularity.
In the end, the perfect first date spot isn’t just about the venue; it’s about creating a setting where two people can relax, be themselves, and see where the conversation leads.
To identify the best U.S. cities for a first date, Tawkify analyzed Yelp venue data, Google search interest, and U.S. Census population estimates across 95 of the most populous American cities.
Each city received a composite score based on equally weighted signals, all normalized on a 0–100 scale using min-max normalization:
Category rating metrics required a minimum sample size of 10 scraped listings to be included.
Yelp venue counts reflected the average of Yelp’s reported total results per category query and may include venues from surrounding areas for smaller cities. Rating and affordability metrics were based on a scraped sample of up to 240 listings per category.
We also conducted an online survey of 1,000 single U.S. adults in March 2026. Respondents were asked about their preferences, experiences, and attitudes related to first date settings and location choices.
Generational breakdowns were as follows: Gen Z 33%, Millennials 47%, Gen X 17%, Baby Boomers 3%. Gender-based findings reflect responses from female (54%) and male (43%) respondents; the remaining 3% identified as nonbinary.
Maximum spend figures were cleaned using the interquartile range (IQR) method to remove statistical outliers prior to averaging.
