By the time you are serious about finding a partner, you have probably heard the fairy-tale version of how love is supposed to work: eyes meet across a room, sparks fly, and the rest writes itself. A new Tawkify survey of 1,004 adults currently in a relationship tells a different, more reassuring story. The path to a lasting partnership tends to wind through a stack of matches, a handful of first dates, and more than one dead end before the right person comes along.
That messiness is not a sign that something went wrong. It’s what the road to a real relationship actually looks like. Below, we break down the numbers behind the search and why the people who found lasting love say the wait was worth it.
Key Takeaways
The average person who used dating apps went through 4 situationships and 3 serious relationships before meeting their current partner.
3 in 4 people (74%) who used dating apps were ghosted at least once before meeting their current partner.
1 in 5 people in a relationship (20%) say finding their current partner took longer than they originally expected.
68% say their relationship wasn’t an instant match, and 79% credit their previous, unsuccessful dating experiences with helping them recognize a better long-term partner.
42% of people in relationships say they seriously considered giving up on dating before meeting their current partner.
Men were four times as likely as women to say the hardest part of dating was getting matches or first dates (28% vs. 7%).
Behind every happy couple is a trail of matches that went nowhere, dates that fizzled, and connections that quietly faded out. The numbers show just how much trial and error most people go through before finding their partner.
The Real Dating Funnel
Before settling into their current relationship, most people worked through several situations that didn’t pan out. On average, the numbers looked like this:
The average person who used dating apps went through 4 situationships and 3 serious relationships before meeting their current partner.
3 in 4 people (74%) who used dating apps were ghosted at least once before meeting their current partner.
Men reported more ghosting than women (66% vs. 56%), and were four times as likely as women to say the hardest part of dating was getting matches or first dates (28% vs. 7%).
How Couples Actually Met
Couples were most likely to meet through friends or family (22%) or on a dating app (21%), followed by school (15%), work (13%), and social media (10%).
More than a third of people (38%) dated entirely offline before meeting their current partner, while just 26% dated mostly or entirely online.
Gen X was the most likely generation to meet a partner through friends or family (26%), and 56% dated entirely offline before meeting their current partner.
Baby boomers were the most offline generation of all, with 68% meeting partners the traditional way rather than online.
The Hardest Part of Looking for Love
When people described what made dating difficult, the biggest hurdle was not rejection or timing. It was simply finding someone worth a conversation in the first place:
More than 2 in 5 people (42%) said the hardest part of dating was finding people worth talking to, well ahead of finding someone looking for commitment (20%).
This is exactly the gap a personalized approach is built to close. Rather than leaving people to sort through endless matches on their own, a Tawkify matchmaker screens for genuine intent and compatibility before an introduction is ever made.
Most Relationships Take Time to Grow
The idea of love at first sight makes for a good movie, but it’s not how most real relationships begin. Far more often, lasting love grows out of an early connection that deepens over time, and out of a willingness to keep going after the misfires.
The Slow Build Wins
Only a small share of people knew right away that they had found a great match. For most, the connection took time to reveal itself, and it grew stronger the longer they leaned in:
Only 30% of people said they knew almost immediately they were a great match, while 68% described a slower build, from an early connection that grew stronger to relationships that took several dates to click.
More than half (54%) said they felt a connection early that grew stronger over time, the single most common way relationships took shape.
More people said love came faster than expected (37%) than said it took longer than expected (20%). Another 21% said the timeline was about what they thought, and 22% had no expectations going in.
Compatibility, not an instant spark, is what these couples were describing. That is why Tawkify leads with the long view. Chemistry can fade, but shared values and a shared vision are what hold up over time.
The Payoff Was Worth the Wait
Nearly 4 in 5 people (79%) agreed that their previous, unsuccessful dating experiences helped them recognize a better long-term partner when they finally met.
More than 4 in 5 people (82%) said they are extremely or very satisfied with their current relationship, and only 2% said they are not at all satisfied.
Looking back, half of the people (51%) said that if they had known how long it would take, they would have felt more hopeful at the start of their dating journey. Only 6% said they would have felt discouraged.
