The Group Chat Runs My Love Life: How Social Circles Are Shaping Modern Love

A woman looks excitedly at her phone while her two female friends help her choose a date on a dating app.

From dissecting post-date texts to raising red flags, friends often play an unofficial (and sometimes decisive) role in who we pursue, pause, or walk away from. To understand just how much influence social circles have on modern love, Tawkify surveyed over 1,000 single Americans about how friends affect their dating decisions, confidence, and commitment timelines.

Key Takeaways

  • 67% of singles said friends are involved in their dating life to some degree.
  • 70% of singles said friend approval boosts their confidence in pursuing someone.
  • Over 1 in 5 singles (22%) stopped pursuing someone because their friends didn’t approve. Single women are 46% more likely than single men to let friend disapproval make them walk away.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 singles (24%) feel “pressured or behind” when seeing friends’ healthy relationships. Single Gen Zers are about twice as likely as Gen Xers to feel this.
  • 78% singles say their friends’ dating advice is at least sometimes right; even so, 1 in 4 (25%) regret following it.

Friends Help Vet Matches (and Sometimes Do the Most)

Infographic on how friends influence dating decisions, from approval to setting matches.
  • 25% of single Americans said friends reviewed their dating profiles or messages, and the same share said friends have set them up with someone they know.
  • Only 4% said they did a “practice date” or role-play to prepare (outfit feedback, conversation practice).
  • 30% said friend involvement was “mostly a help,” compared with 10% who said “mostly a hindrance.” Nearly half (48%) said it was a mix of both.

Methodology

Tawkify surveyed 1,012 single U.S. adults in January 2026 about the role friends play in their dating lives. Respondents were asked about friend involvement, advice-seeking behaviors, trust dynamics, and how friends’ relationships affect their own dating outlook. The gender breakdown was 49% women, 48% men, and 2% non-binary. Generationally, the sample consisted of 46% millennials, 37% Gen Z, 14% Gen X, and 2% baby boomers. The mean age was 34 years. Some percentages in this study may not total 100% due to rounding.
