By the time you’re dating in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, you’ve likely collected a small library of relationship advice, some useful, some not. A new Tawkify survey of 732 single adults over 40 set out to learn which voices singles trust most for guidance on modern dating, and whether that advice makes their next move any clearer.
The results point to a widening trust gap. Singles said they lean on the people closest to them, and increasingly on AI, more than they lean on trained professionals, even as many said the advice they get leaves them second-guessing themselves rather than more confident. Below, we break down whose voice singles over 40 trust most, whose advice they tend to ignore, and where the search for a second opinion is headed next.
Key Takeaways
About 3 in 5 singles (59%) say they turn to their single friends for dating advice more than anyone else.
Less than one-third of singles (27%) say married friends give the best dating advice.
1 in 5 singles (21%) say social media creators give the worst dating advice.
28% of singles rate AI dating advice as better than advice from people they know personally.
AI has overtaken Reddit as a dating advice source among singles: 29% regularly turn to AI tools like ChatGPT vs. 23% who turn to Reddit.
44% of singles have ignored their own gut because someone else’s dating advice convinced them otherwise; single friends were the top influence (50% of that group).
Married friends were the second-most-common source of advice, sought by half of singles over 40 (50%), and ranked as the single most trustworthy source overall (18%).
Family members were consulted by 38% of singles over 40, the third-most-common source, though they ranked third in trustworthiness too, behind married and single friends.
Adult children were the least consulted source of dating advice among singles over 40, cited by just 8%, trailing even divorced friends (24%) and Reddit (23%).
AI Is Becoming a Go-To Source
Nearly 3 in 10 singles over 40 (29%) said they regularly sought dating advice from AI tools like ChatGPT.
Both AI tools and therapists are trusted by 7% of singles over 40 as sources of dating advice.
Half of singles over 40 (50%) said AI dating advice was at least as good as advice from people they knew personally.
Female singles over 40 were more likely than male singles over 40 to seek out AI for dating advice (32% vs. 26%).
Judgment and Generational Patterns
More singles over 40 trusted their own judgment above any outside source (28%) than any single human advice source.
Women were more likely than men to trust their own judgment above any outside source (32% vs. 22%).
Gen X leaned hardest on single friends, with 66% seeking their advice compared with 52% of millennials and 58% of baby boomers.
Baby boomers were the most likely generation to trust their own judgment first (37%, compared with 28% of Gen X and 25% of millennials).
Who Comes Across as Honest, Relatable, or Out of Touch
The Most (and Least) Trusted Voices
More than a quarter of singles over 40 (27%) called married friends the best source of relationship advice.
Social media creators ranked first as both the worst source of dating advice (21%) and the most out-of-touch source (20%) among singles over 40.
Therapists ranked as the second-most-honest source of dating advice (15%).
When Advice Backfires
Among the 44% of singles over 40 who ignored their own instincts because of someone else’s dating advice, single friends were the top influence (50%), followed by family members (35%) and married friends (33%).
Nearly 9 in 10 singles over 40 (88%) said they ignored dating advice at least sometimes because the person giving it didn’t understand today’s dating.
Millennials were more likely than baby boomers to have ignored their own instincts because of someone else’s dating advice (48% vs. 37%).
Finding Clarity in a Sea of Advice
Navigating the complexities of modern dating can often feel like listening to too many conflicting voices at once. With so many singles feeling uncertain or second-guessing their instincts after following well-intentioned but misguided advice, it’s worth considering that the best guidance doesn’t always come from the loudest sources.
Professional matchmakers and certified relationship coaches, like those at Tawkify, offer a steady, objective perspective. They help singles cut through the noise of opinions and focus on what genuinely aligns with their personal goals. Sometimes, the most helpful step isn’t collecting more opinions, but finding a trusted partner dedicated to understanding your unique journey.

Methodology
Tawkify surveyed 732 single adults aged 40 and older to understand where they turn for relationship advice, whom they trust most for guidance, and how outside advice affects their dating decisions. The survey examined which voices, from single friends and married couples to therapists, adult children, dating podcasts, Reddit, and AI tools like ChatGPT, come across as most honest, most out of touch, and most likely to steer someone away from their own instincts. The average age of respondents was 49. The gender breakdown was 60% women, 40% men, and less than 1% nonbinary. The survey was conducted online in August 2026.
