If dating apps were supposed to make love easier, why do so many singles feel more drained than ever? In a new national survey of Americans who use dating apps, the emotional aftermath is undeniable: burnout, disappointment, and a growing desire to log off for good. As dating app fatigue reaches a boiling point, many singles are rethinking what it really means to connect.
The pace of dating is faster than ever, but is it better? Singles are starting to question whether the hours they spend on apps are actually moving them closer to meaningful connection.
Dating apps have officially entered their fatigue era. Dating app users swipe an average of 58 times before having a meaningful conversation, and they feel that 77% of the time spent on these apps is wasted.
A majority of users said they feel disappointed (58%), frustrated (55%), and emotionally drained (55%) when using dating apps. Nearly half (48%) felt burned out by the app dating scene, and 44% said these apps make them feel even more lonely. Over a quarter (28%) believe the apps don’t work, and most users (88%) said they would rather meet someone in person.
Yet, many remain caught in a loop. On average, users deleted and redownloaded dating apps six times a year. Singles are clearly looking for connection, but these apps are keeping them stuck rather than helping them move forward.
Tired of swiping with no real connections? Tawkify takes a fresh approach to the process. With handpicked matches tailored just for you and personalized introductions, we do the work so you can focus on what matters — meaningful connections.
Behind the swipes, many users are quietly absorbing emotional hits. The pressure to perform and be chosen can wear on even the most confident singles.
Dating can take a real emotional toll. Putting yourself out there takes courage, and on dating apps, the response isn’t always kind. Over one-third of users (36%) said their self-esteem has suffered since using them.
While many users (64%) are looking for a serious relationship, not everyone is swiping for love. Fourteen percent admitted they use dating apps for an ego boost, and 10% said they turn to them simply to feel better about themselves.
More than anything, users are fed up with how these platforms work. A strong majority (77%) believe dating apps promote shallow behavior over genuine connection. And 74% said the apps reward quantity over quality, making meaningful interactions feel few and far between.
Despite the swipe fatigue, hope isn’t lost. Singles are still looking for love. They’re just seeking better ways to find it.
Forty-four percent of dating app users said they’re planning to take a break from the dating app grind this summer, choosing instead to meet potential partners in person. Encouragingly, 45% felt optimistic about finding love this way.
Many are turning to their inner circles for help. Over half (52%) hope to meet someone through friends or family introductions, and about 1 in 4 are eyeing live events and hobby-based groups (think concerts, book clubs, or running crews) as promising places to spark something real.
There’s also high skepticism toward algorithmic dating. When it comes to pairing them with someone compatible, 71% of users said they trust real people more than an app.
Dating apps are exhausting, and singles are ready for a change. Whether it’s the endless swiping, the hit to self-esteem, or just the desire for something real, people are craving deeper, more meaningful in-person connections. For those ready to log off and try something different, there’s a whole world of offline possibilities waiting, starting with a little help from someone who actually gets it.
We surveyed 1,000 single Americans to explore dating app culture. Of the respondents, 66% were currently using apps or had been in the past year, and only their responses were shown.
